AI answers in Google still depend on ordinary SEO

AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve pages from Search. Unique, people-first content and a crawlable site matter more than new “AI SEO” files.

Based on Google's Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search

People increasingly use generative AI in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, to find information. Google’s guide for site owners is direct: the usual SEO practices still apply, because those AI features are built on the same ranking and quality systems as Search. They retrieve pages from the index, then use that material to write a response and show links.

Two ideas behind the answers

Retrieval-augmented generation means the model is grounded in pages Google’s ranking systems already consider relevant and current, instead of answering only from memory. Query fan-out means one question can trigger several related searches. A person asking how to fix a weedy lawn might also pull results about herbicides, non-chemical removal, and prevention. Your page does not need a separate URL for every variation. Publishing many near-duplicate pages to chase those side queries can cross into scaled content abuse.

You will see the labels AEO and GEO — answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization. Google’s position is that optimizing for its generative features is still SEO. Third-party advice under those names should be checked against Google’s own pages.

What still helps

The strongest long-term factor Google names is content people find unique and useful. A firsthand account is different from a summary anyone could generate. Commodity listicles add little. Non-commodity pages add a specific experience. Structure the page for a human reader: paragraphs, sections, headings. Strong images and video can appear in these features the same way they can appear in Search, if you already follow image and video guidance.

Technical basics have not been replaced. A page generally needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. It also needs to be included for Search generative AI features in Search Console. Crawling still matters, because the models use publicly accessible pages. JavaScript should follow the existing JavaScript guidance. Duplicate URLs still waste attention. Local businesses and stores can surface through Business Profile and Merchant Center, including inside some AI responses.

What Google says you can skip

Measurement belongs in Search Console’s generative AI performance report, not in a tool that claims secret Google metrics. No outside product has Google’s internal ranking systems.

Paraline does not run a separate “AI SEO” program. When Google’s AI features cite or link a business, it is because the same pages are eligible, crawlable, and useful in ordinary Search. We keep following the documents Google publishes, including this one, and we check the generative AI report the same way we check the performance report: what showed up, and what should change next.
